She has an extensive background in communications and government relations\, in both public and private sectors. She started her career as a journalist for The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald covering local government in various Miami-Dade municipalities. Alexa has received numerous awards for her work\, including the prestigious Communication Award presented by the National Academy of Sciences\, regional Emmy Awards\, a regional Edward R. Murrow Award\, and an award from the Society of Environmental Journalists.
