Presented by the Women In Business Council, The Woman Effect is a virtual podcast-style interview with women who have made it, in a male dominated industry. Guests will be CEOs and/or executives from various industries all over the US. The entire event will be one hour, from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. The first 30-minutes will be the guest telling her story on FB Live while the second 30 minutes will be an intimate discussion with up to 20 women "offline" in Zoom.
This week's speaker: Sika Henry, First Black Female Pro Triathlete
Sika Henry is a Corporate Analyst for Ferguson Enterprises and a Professional Triathlete based in Newport News, VA. As a collegiate high jumper and sprinter, Sika became an NCAA All-American in Track and Field while earning her degree in Economics from Tufts University. She is a 2019 IRONMAN World Championship finisher and a 2-time Marathon Champ. After recovering from a traumatic bike accident that left Sika with significant injuries, she made history when she became the first African-American Woman to race as a professional triathlete in September 2021. Sika was named Athlete of the Year as part of the 2020 Outspoken Women in Triathlon Awards for her work to advocate for and make positive change in the sport of triathlon. On April 30, 2022 Sika will be inducted into the National Black Distance Running Hall of Fame.
What Sika says:
"I compete in a sport where women make up only 35% of participants, there are less than 1.0% African American participants, and only one professional African American woman. In May 2021, I became that woman. The lack of diversity in triathlon has been driven by barriers to entry such as finances, limited access to pools, lack of safe infrastructure for riding bikes, and an absence of representation. My drive to compete at the elite level is to help knock down some of there barriers and be a role model for women and people of color in a non-mainstream sport."
