Sanitation Truck Operator Trainee

The Town of Lake Park seeks a Sanitation Truck Operator Trainee to join our Public Works team – Sanitation division. Under supervision of the Sanitation Foreman, the Sanitation Truck Operator Trainee performs manual and entry-level skilled work as part of a crew to safely and effectively collect and dispose of residential garbage, recyclables, bulk trash, and vegetation. The trainee will gain on-the-job experience while assisting Sanitation Truck Operators I and II in the operation of various sanitation equipment, including side—and rear-load garbage packers, trash trucks with grapple booms, skid steer loaders, and tractors with attachments - ensuring that assigned work is completed efficiently and following safety standards. This position can be promoted to Sanitation Truck Operator I if all job-related functions and performance expectations are met satisfactorily during the 6-month probationary period of employment.
Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the operation of sanitation vehicles for curbside garbage, recycling, bulk trash, and vegetation collection.
  • Support the safe operation of trucks and equipment in the loading, hauling, and disposal of waste materials.
  • Conduct routine inspections, cleaning, fueling, and preventive maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Learn and apply occupational safety rules and best practices in waste management operations.
  • Respond to inquiries from residents and assist in addressing service-related concerns.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Respond to emergency call-ins, including hurricanes and other critical events.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Six (6) months of experience driving air brake-equipped commercial vehicles and/or equipment preferred.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brakes endorsement within six (6) months from the date of employment.
  • No loss of driving privileges due to revocation, suspension, or denial of license in the past 24 months.
  • No convictions or adjudications withheld of three (3) or more moving violations in the previous 24 months.
  • Willingness to learn and develop skills for a career in sanitation services.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Basic knowledge of sanitation operations and waste collection procedures preferred.
  • Skill in operating air brake-equipped commercial vehicles and/or equipment.
  • Ability to perform maintenance inspections of light and medium-duty vehicles and/or equipment.
  • Strong ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Willingness to learn and develop skills necessary for a career in sanitation services.
Physical Requirements:
  • Heavy work requiring exertion of up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly.
  • Frequent physical activities such as balancing, climbing, crouching, grasping, handling, lifting, pulling, pushing, standing, stooping, talking, and walking.
Work Environment:
  • Work performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery, with potential exposure to adverse conditions such as weather, noise, and waste materials.
  • Compliance with all Town safety policies and procedures is required.
