JOB SUMMARY
The Camp Counselor position is a summer-seasonal position performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor. Incumbents in this position are responsible for leading, directing, and assisting youth enrolled in summer camp group activities, educational programs, arts and crafts, team sports, off-site field trips.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Supervises campers during all summer camp activities.
- Assists in the coordination of program activities including but not limited to team sports, games, arts and crafts, workshops, special events and off-site field trips.
- Guides and supports individual campers in participating successfully in summer camp activities.
- Enforces summer camp safety rules and carries out established procedures for ensuring the health and safety of summer camp participants.
- Reports and records details of incidents, such as accidents or rule violations.
- Cleans, maintains and ensures proper use of all camp facilities and equipment.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required
- A minimum of three (3) months of experience working or volunteering with children in a camp setting, youth program, recreation or in a related field
- Must obtain First Aid and CPR AED Heartsaver certification prior to the commencement of summer camp
- Must be able to swim

- Knowledge of safety policies and procedures for children
- Ability to communicate effectively with campers, coworkers, and parents
- Ability to maintain positive relationships with campers and their parents or guardians
- Ability to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury, etc.)
- Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to activities
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, feeling, handling, hearing, lifting, mental acuity, reaching, speaking, stooping, standing, standing, visual acuity, and walking.
